Red Sox Trade Infielder To Mets For Cash

Red Sox Trade Infielder to Mets for Cash

Mets Acquire Versatile Infielder for Depth

The Boston Red Sox have traded infielder Jeter Downs to the New York Mets for cash considerations, the team announced Monday. Downs, 24, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last week. The move gives the Mets some much-needed depth in the infield, as they have been hit by injuries to several key players this season.

Downs Versatile Addition to Mets

Downs is a versatile infielder who can play both shortstop and second base. He is also a switch-hitter, which gives the Mets some flexibility in their lineup. Downs has not played in the majors this season, but he has a career .275 batting average in the minors. He was considered one of the Red Sox's top prospects before the 2022 season, but he struggled at the plate and was eventually sent down to Triple-A.

Mets Bolster Infield Depth

The Mets have been without shortstop Francisco Lindor and second baseman Jeff McNeil for much of the season. Lindor is expected to return soon, but McNeil is out for the year with a torn ACL. Downs will provide the Mets with some much-needed depth in the infield, and he could even be a starter if Lindor or McNeil misses more time.

Red Sox Clear Roster Space

The Red Sox designated Downs for assignment last week to make room on the roster for first baseman Eric Hosmer. Downs was out of options, so the Red Sox had to either trade him or release him. They were able to get some cash in return for Downs, which is a good deal considering he was not a part of their long-term plans.
